PITCH PREPARATION

Step 1- Litsen to given tracks and pick a song which you would like to produce your music video to.

Step 2- Intial research on codes and conventions assossicated with the genre of the music- look into other music videos which has the same genre.

• How is the artist represented?
• What type of video has been produced? e.g narrtive/concept/performance
• What is the relationship between music and visual?
• What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

Is there a common trend between all videos of this music genre? why?

Step 3- With such initail conventions in mind build upon your inital ideas for your video: Prepare you pitch taking into consideration the following:

• Location
• Performance style
• props
• casting
• effects (final cut? photoshop)
• overall vision
• audience attarction (why would it hold an audiences attention for the duration)

MAKE SURE ALL WORK IS ON YOUR BLOG WITH IMAGES AND VIDEOS TO ILLUSTRATE EXAMPLES.

Step 4- Pitch Presentation in two lessons time.

Your ideas will change and develop throughout the production process however, it is important to view your intial ideas.

CODES OF A MAGAZINE ADVERT

1. Name of band/ artist and album

3. Band/artist image/ style
4. Featuring songs
5. Form of release (CD, download)
6. Either photograph or artwork as main image
7. Record company
8. Bands website – myspace /official page
9. Critical quotes, ratings
10. Set colour scheme

NOTE: The conventions of the magazine advert will differ depending on the genre of the music that has been produced. For example, when discussing colour scheme you may recognise that an advert for a pop album may be different from that of a hiphop advert.





TASK: You can either pick two adverts yourself or use the above adverts.
Analysis the two adverts in terms of the above codes and specify the differing conventions. Explain your answer by giving specific examples from each advert.

Auteur Theory

The term auteur originates from France which translates as author, which means that a directors film reflects thier creative vision.

This can also be the case for Music Videos.

The music video would show signs of excessive use of directors own visual perceptions through the use of signatures.

An autueur is a film maker whose style and practise is distinctive who creates a signature auteur status for them. It is also a film maker who has personal, signature style and keeps creative control over his or her work.

HYPE WILLIAMS

Auteur Theory focuses on the following:

1. Individual Stylistic features
2. How texts are determined by artists creativity
3. How texts emerge as part of an artists body of work

Areas of recognisable signatures could include;

·         Colour

·         Transitions

·         Use or absence of narrative

·         Location

·         Actors

Names of those who are classified as an auteur:

1.      Spike Jonez :Influential and alternative videos.

2.      Chris Cunningham: Known for his warped style and disturbing imagery. 

3.      Michel Gondry: Abstract approach with use of visual effects.

4.      Jonathan Glazer: Use of voice overs, narratives and theatrical lighting.

5.      Hype Williams: Use of Solid colour backgrounds, Bright colours and central camera shots.

TASK: 1.Pick an auteur from the list above. 2. Watch two music videos directed by the auteur. 3. Answer the following:
What is the signature of the director? give examples from both videos.
Using MEDIA LANGUAGE (micro areas) analyse how the signature has been created.

Music Video Types

There are three different types of music videos which you could look into whilst producing your productions.

1. Narrative based
2. Concept Videos
3. Performance Videos

Example Videos:

Narrative Videos
A narrative based music video contains mostly footage that attempts to tell a story through the moving image. Usually involving actors, the story is sometimes linked to the lyrical content of the song, but this isn't always the case.


 


Performance Base
These are music videos that feature the artist/band/group performing the song through most if not all of the video. It’s probably the easiest to do on a budget provided you can get a suitable location for filming.



Concept Base
This is a style of music video that is based around a single concept or idea. These types of videos tend to be fairly unusual or utilize a particular editing or filming technique.
