Auteur Theory

The term auteur originates from France which translates as author, which means that a directors film reflects thier creative vision.
This can also be the case for Music Videos.
The music video would show signs of excessive use of directors own visual perceptions through the use of signatures.

An autueur is a film maker whose style and practise is distinctive who creates a signature auteur status for them. It is also a film maker who has personal, signature style and keeps creative control over his or her work.
HYPE WILLIAMS
Auteur Theory focuses on the following:
  1. Individual Stylistic features
  2. How texts are determined by artists creativity
  3. How texts emerge as part of an artists body of work

Areas of recognisable signatures could include;
·         Colour
·         Transitions
·         Use or absence of narrative
·         Location
·         Actors


Names of those who are classified as an auteur:

1.      Spike Jonez :Influential and alternative videos.
2.      Chris Cunningham: Known for his warped style and disturbing imagery. 
3.      Michel Gondry: Abstract approach with use of visual effects.
4.      Jonathan Glazer: Use of voice overs, narratives and theatrical lighting.
5.      Hype Williams: Use of Solid colour backgrounds, Bright colours and central camera shots.



TASK: 1.Pick an auteur from the list above. 2. Watch two music videos directed by the auteur. 3. Answer the following:
What is the signature of the director? give examples from both videos.
Using MEDIA LANGUAGE (micro areas) analyse how the signature has been created.
